Trip cost calculator
Find out what a journey will cost in fuel before you set off. Enter the distance, how much fuel your car or motorbike uses, and today's fuel price.
Enter the distance, your fuel consumption and the fuel price to see what the trip will cost.
How the trip cost is worked out
The calculator multiplies the distance by your fuel consumption to get the litres the trip needs, then multiplies that by the price per litre. For a 350 km trip in a car that does 12.5 km/L, that's 28 litres; at 5,000 per litre the fuel costs 140,000. Tick “Round trip” to double the distance, and split the cost between passengers if you're sharing the ride.
Typical fuel consumption
Don't know your figure? These rough ranges are a reasonable starting point. Older vehicles, city driving, and heavy loads sit at the top end.
| Vehicle | km/L | L/100 km |
|---|---|---|
| Motorbike (100–150cc) | 35–50 km/L | 2–3 L/100 km |
| Small hatchback | 14–20 km/L | 5–7 L/100 km |
| Saloon / sedan | 11–16 km/L | 6–9 L/100 km |
| SUV | 8–11 km/L | 9–13 L/100 km |
| Pickup / van | 7–10 km/L | 10–14 L/100 km |
Questions
- How is the fuel cost of a trip calculated?
- Fuel needed is the distance divided by your km per litre (or, in litres per 100 km, the distance multiplied by that figure and divided by 100). Multiply the litres by the price per litre and you have the fuel cost of the trip.
- Where do I find my vehicle's fuel consumption?
- The most accurate figure comes from your own fill-ups: fill the tank, note the odometer, and at the next full fill-up divide the litres you put in by the kilometres driven. The manufacturer's figure is a good starting point, but real-world driving usually uses more.
- Does the calculator include tolls, parking or wear and tear?
- No, it covers fuel only. Tolls, parking, and the cost of servicing and tyres add to what a trip really costs, so treat the result as the minimum.
- Why does my real fuel cost come out higher?
- Traffic, short trips, a heavy load, air conditioning, underinflated tyres, and hard acceleration all push consumption up. Hilly roads and high speeds on the highway do too.
